Topic: ZIP-File could not be extracted Posted: May 29 2011 at 11:04am |
|
I tried to upload a copy of my website as a ZIP-File to sites-2-go on my iPad. The ZIP file is 1 GByte, extracted the site is 1.6 GByte big. On the iPad there is around 5GByte of free space.
After the upload the sites-2-go reports that it could not extract the ZIP file. A test with a smaller ZIP file (162 MB) works fine.
Where is the problem?

How did you upload the file to the app? Via WiFi, or from iTunes?
Can you also check the Total number of files in the ZIP?
The app might have problems extracting archive that has more than 64 thousand files.

The ZIP file contains 76'000 files :-( Is there a way to get around this limitation? Otherwise you should mention this limitation in the description of the app...

The workaround - split the ZIP archive in two parts, and upload them separately. We will update the app description on AppStore.
FYI, you are pushing iPad limits when uploading such huge amount of files to the tablets. iTunes backup might not work after that, because Apple code will try to backup each file separately, and this either will take forever, or iTunes may even crash.

Hmm, could you add a switch to your app as an option not to backup the files with iTunes (I read in another app this this is possible)? I don't need files backuped I already have on my computer...
(I already saw the changed app description on AppStore, thanks!)

We'll consider such option in one of next releases.

On a related theme, I was so pleased to find Site-2-Go I bought it without reading the 2GB limit warning. My main site has less than 10,000 files but is well over 2GB and naturally fails to load. Do you have any idea when the 2GB limit may be overcome? I presume an OS file size for the zip file? My individual files are not huge, but there's quite a few of the bulky ones. An exciting product in spite of this limit
